How to ask the tarot a better question

A reading is only ever as good as the question underneath it. The cards do not decide your future; they reflect the situation you point them at. Point them at something narrow and anxious, and you get a narrow, anxious answer. Point them at something open, and they have room to say something useful.

Here is how to ask in a way that gives the spread something to work with.

Trade yes/no for what and how

Will he call? closes every door but one. What is keeping this from moving forward? opens the whole situation. Yes/no questions ask the cards to flip a coin. Open questions ask them to describe a landscape, which is the thing tarot is actually good at.

Ask about your part in it

The questions that change things are usually about you, not the other person. What am I not seeing about this job? will always take you further than Will I get the job? One you can act on tomorrow. The other you can only wait on.

Stay in the present

Tarot reads the current of things as they stand, not a fixed date on a calendar. Skip when. Ask where the current is heading and what is shaping it, and you will get guidance you can steer by instead of a prophecy you can only check against later.

One question at a time

Stacking three worries into one draw gives you a blurred answer to all of them. If love and money are both on your mind, that is two readings. Let each one have the table to itself.

A few questions to borrow

• What do I need to understand about this situation right now?
• What is the cost of staying where I am?
• Where is my energy actually going, and is it where I want it?
• What would help me let go of this?

The cards answer the question you ask, not the one you are afraid to.
